Commission, “But there’s still a lot to do. We’ve got to build an approach ramp, then we’ve got to scrap and paint and refurnish the vessel. Everything will be donated to us.” There was evidence of the outstanding cooperation this past week. Heavy equipment from Lincoln, Diamond and McLean construction com panies was busy dredging the slip for the vessel ond spreading the spoil along the waterfront for a parking area. Horne said that Carolina Power and Light Compan., has promised to haul sand to the area for spreading so Fourth of July activity on the waterfront will not be disrupted. Horne said the vessel should be on the waterfront this weekend in time for the popular Independence Day celebration, although sightseers will not be allowed on the ship until the approach ramp is built. “It’s going to be a good project,” Horne promised. “It’s going to promote tourism, and we’ll have brochures concerning dif ferent points of interest in the area.” Work towards obtaining the ship began in 1967, when a local group was formed with the primary purpose of seeing that the vessel was brought safely from Port smouth, Virginia, to South port. But little else was done until the present 13-member Frying Pan Lightship Commission was created in October last year. Horne said that more help is expected from Southport citizens when it comes time to paint and refurbish the ship.
